How do DECT phones work? A typical office, hospital, factory or warehouse has many telephones within the building all connected by wires back to the main switchboard (the PBX). The DECT wireless PBX provides an alternative that offers much greater flexibility - a small number of radio basestations are wired back to the PBX instead and cordless DECT handsets communicate by radio to these basestations. Each base station has a typical range of about 300 metres. DECT systems can either completely replace or run alongside your existing office phone system.

An outside call, or an internal call to an extension number, for a given handset is automatically routed to the correct handset, wherever it may be on the premises at the time. As the user moves around the site the radio coverage is handed over from one basestation to another without any noticeable break in the connection.

With DECT you get direct communication but at a fraction of the cost of calling a mobile plus all the features and functionality of a desktop telephone.
