Firstly, do you need a telephone headset at all? If you ever prop your telephone handset between your shoulder and ear then the answer is probably yes!
OK, so do you go for a corded or a cordless headset? If you tend not to leave your desk when using the phone and you just want hands-free convenience then corded is fine. Look out for QD or Quick Disconnect corded headsets as these have a quick disconnect clip on the headset cable that allows you to leave your desk without having to remove the headset. If you want the freedom to leave your desk when using the phone then you need to go for cordless. These headsets are either based on DECT or Bluetooth technology.
DECT Technology (Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephony) is used for desk based cordless headsets offering a typical range of 50 metres in an office environment - see DECT Phones.
Bluetooth Technology offers still more flexibility and is used for cordless headsets that may be linked to both desk telephones or Bluetooth enabled mobile phones.
Now to the choice of features. If you work in a noisy office environment consider choosing Noise-Cancelling microphones that screen out extraneous sound. This improves call quality for the caller who will not hear the background noise around the headset wearer.
Monaural headsets have a headband with a single ear receiver. These are the most popular type of headset as you can keep one ear on what's happening around you, just like a traditional handset.
Binaural headsets have a headband with two ear receivers that are ideal for an environment where you need to concentrate fully on the caller, with no background distraction.
Over-the-Ear heasets have no headband and simply clip over the top of your ear. Not recommended if you wear glasses.
